Boston Medical Center, (BMC) a private, not-for-profit, academic medical center is the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine.  Consistent with its mission to provide the best in health care to all, without exception, BMC is the largest safety net hospital in New England with 496-beds. BMC reaches into the community as a founding partner of Boston HealthNet, a network of 15 community health centers serving more than a quarter million people annually. BMC is the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England and received an A” Hospital Safety Score from The Leapfrog Group.  In a few years, BMC will transition facilities from two pavilions into one new comprehensive hospital.

The Director of the Care Management and Inpatient Social Services Department (CM) reports to the Vice President, Revenue Cycle and works closely with the Medical Director.  Responsible for over 80 FTEs and an $8 million budget, the Director is supported by 4 Managers:  Care Management Practice, Social Work, Care Management Operations, and Denials.  BMC’s case mix is 1.7 and ALOS is 4.7 days.

The Director will have a vision for the integration of case management into the clinical and financial viability of the organization. The Director is responsible for developing systems and processes for care, utilization management, and discharge planning.  The Director oversees the collection, analysis, and reporting of financial and quality data related to utilization management, quality and performance improvement.  The Director must appropriately engage and lead people, relationships, and processes in interdisciplinary teams in order to achieve excellent results.    The Director will develop the department’s business and staffing plan, and lead this strong team to implement it effectively: reducing length of stay, preventing and managing denials, evaluating the auditing system to improve front end processes while serving the needs of the community and its many vulnerable patients.

The ideal candidate will have a deep sense of mission to serve a diverse and underserved patient population; contemporary case management leadership expertise including an understanding of the payment, clinical documentation and practice systems required; an ability to establish collaborative relationships with physician leaders and other disciplines; and experience mentoring and coaching leaders.  Candidates must be able to communicate effectively, and work successfully in a union environment. 

Candidates will have at least 7 years of acute care clinical experience in a complex academic environment, and care management related leadership experience. Experience with AllScripts and EPIC preferred. A Master’s Degree is required, or equivalent education/experience, along with Massachusetts RN license eligible.
