Nurse Managers – Pediatric and Cardiac Critical Care

Nurse Managers (2), – Pediatric and Cardiac Critical Care

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, New York City

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) opened its doors to the Bronx and surrounding communities in 2001.  The hospital has been ranked among the Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in subspecialties including Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Nephrology. The growth and momentum is palpable at CHAM, having recruited some of the world’s leading pediatric specialists and acquired the latest technology.  With 132 beds, CHAM is an integral part of the Montefiore Medical Center, a 125-year-old hospital and health system, and The University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. CHAM’s increasing volumes led to an expansion of Pediatric Critical Care from 20 to 26 beds in 2013. Leading the region in outcomes, CHAM’s surgeons have a 100% one-year transplant survival rate. The Pediatric Heart Center, a world leader in advanced cardiovascular care for patients with congenital heart disease, is recruiting a chief of pediatric cardiovascular surgery.

Responsibilities of the two Nurse Managers for the Pediatric Critical Care Unit (PCCU) and Cardio-Thoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) include:

  • Reporting to the Director of Nursing for CHAM, the 2 managers will lead this dynamic unit, comprised of general critical care and cardiothoracic care for patients newborn to 21 years. They will share the 24/7 administrative responsibilities of overseeing all of the staff, fiscal and administrative goals for the growing unit.  They will each have oversight over their clinical concentration.
  • The Managers are supported by Patient Care Coordinators, and accountable for a staff of 100+ FTEs.
  • Key areas of responsibility are: developing and improving systems of clinical care to ensure effective outcomes; empowering and engaging staff; and financial and administrative accountability.

Qualifications of the Nurse Managers:

  • Desired attributes of the managers include: transformational leaders to develop a stronger foundation of systems of care for a fast growing unit; strong advocates for patient safety and quality; and the ability to relate well with and influence nurses, physicians and other disciplines.
  • The Managers will empower their staff through interdisciplinary collaboration, communication and teamwork. Shared governance is the goal for nursing throughout the unit and Children’s Hospital.
  • Must be organized project managers and effective at partnering with another manager on the unit.
  • Candidates will have both critical care clinical experience and management experience, preferably in pediatrics; one of the managers will also have cardiothoracic critical care experience.
  • Familiarity with EPIC is ideal, as implementation begins in 2014; Magnet experience is preferred.
  • BSN and Master’s degree are required, along with active/eligible New York RN license. A candidate currently enrolled in a Master’s program may be considered.

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is located in the Bronx, NY – easily commutable from Manhattan and other NYC boroughs, as well as the suburbs of Westchester County, NY and New Jersey.
